Ordinate Measurement in Glovius

Ordinate dimensions are continuous measurements from a reference entity. This style of measurement is typically useful for analyzing manufacturing operations where relative distance between entities is required. For example, if you need to calculate the amount of travel of a tool bit and need to measure the distances between drilled holes in a component, ordinate measurement helps you to quickly figure out the distances between holes and the standard reference entity.

In the latest release, we have added a new feature that enables you to continually drop the ordinate dimensions. This tool is located in the Measure tab. Select an entity ( a point or edge ) that serves as the reference. Now continue selection along a axis to place the ordinates dimensions.

Improved export to 3D HTML from CAD

We recently launched a Glovius Plus plan that allows your to export CAD parts and assemblies to STEP, IGES and Parasolid formats. We are adding even more options to export your CAD files to various formats.

In this release, apart from a number of visual and performance improvements, we have added Measure and View analysis tools that adds to the usefulness of 3D HTML files.

  1. Measure : Measure points, line segments and circular arcs
  2. View Analyses tools :  Apply colors to components, Toggle Visibility or Isolate components

Introducing Glovius PLUS – Export CAD to STEP

We are excited to announce a new plan – Glovius PLUS.

STEP files have become the defacto standard in CAD data exchange. With the Glovius PLUS plan you can now export your CAD parts and assemblies to standard data exchange formats. You can also export to IGES, Parasolid and 3MF formats. 3MF is a universal specification for 3D Printing industry and supported by a variety of founding companies like Microsoft, Autodesk, Dassault Systems, PTC and Siemens.

CAD Collision Detection Tools

With the latest release, we have launched Collision detection tools in Glovius. The ability to check for collision in an assembly is mainly useful for two reasons :

  1. Check for CAD assembly integrity : Quickly analyze whether the various components in the assembly have been assembled properly. With a single tool analyze the spatial arrangement of component parts and sub-assemblies in an assembly. Check if the assembled position of the component has intersections that compromise the overall integrity of the assembly.
  2. Verify CAD assemblies  : Detect and verify if components maintain the recommended clearance values. This is especially useful during system integration checks.

CAD Collaboration with Glovius – Video

We talked about CAD collaboration using Glovius in our earlier posts. Many Glovius are using this functionality to reviews their designs, showcase and share them. The main advantages of using this underlying Glovius cloud service is

CAD Collaboration with Glovius

We recently announced our CAD collaboration initiative – Glovius Cloud. Now, with the latest product update to Glovius desktop app, you can add and view comments directly in the app. This enables a true multi platform CAD collaboration solution for Glovius users.

During the design cycle various teams are involved in bringing the design from concept to life. This involves collaboration between different teams – Designers, Manufacturing Engineers, QC Engineers, Program Managers, Cost Estimators, Should Costing Teams and many more. Usually, the collaboration across these teams happens with a wide and variety of tools and disparate systems – drawings, image snapshots, derivative reports or sometimes even by email. This leads to severe lack of trace-ability, loss of information and repetition. Glovius CAD collaboration is designed to be a multi platform tool that serves as the basis for all discussions on 3D parts and assemblies.

New and Improved Measurement

“What can’t be measured, can’t be improved” goes the old management adage. However, this adage can be adapted to engineering as well. Designers and Engineers measure their designs for knowing the intent, check/plan manufacturing steps, check for ease of assembly and a variety of other use cases. Measuring the radius of a hole, the length of an edge, the dimensions of a slot,the area of a face or the angle of axis are all essential tools to understand and analyze designs.

For most of our Glovius users, the Measure tool is the most prominent and critical function used for their workflow. We listened to our users on ways to improve and make Measurement more effective for them. With this in mind, we have revamped the Measure tool in the latest release .

You will notice that now all the Measure tool options are cleanly laid out in a dedicated tab. The layout has been designed based on all the options that you would need to measure. You not only have highlighted the standard measurement tools like the distance or the angle between edges, but also tools to measure specific entities like the angle between two hole axes or the radius of a circle passing through three points.

All the Measure tools have been grouped as per their type, namely :

  1. Point : Measure the coordinates of a point
  2. Length : Measure the length of an edge. Calculate the total length of edges using Tape tool
  3. Linear : Measure the linear distance between two entities. Choose points, edges, or circles and combination between them to measure the distance
  4. Radial : Calculate the radius or a diameter of a circle. Calculate the radius of a circle passing through three points
  5. Angular : Measure the angle between edges, faces and axes
  6. Area : Measure the area of a surface

The new tools compliment our existing feature set in Measure. Download Glovius and give it a try.

Glovius for Part Design Analysis

Glovius offers a number of tools that are purpose built for analyzing part designs. These tools help you analyze the design of the part and the ease of manufacturing. These tools have a wide variety of applications such as –

  1. Calculate the extents of the part design using the Analyze tool
  2. Visualize the internals of a component using advanced Section tool
  3. Check feature definitions using the Measure tool
  4. Compare two versions of a part to identify the changes in 3D
  5. Analyze the material distribution of parts using the Thickness analysis tool
  6. Calculate the manufacturing parameters using Projected area tool
  7. Ensure the component’s ease of manufacturing with the help of Draft analysis tool

Analyze Tool
Analyze tool is designed to give you a quick overview of the component. It is designed to highlight the most important parameters of the component at a glance. Analyze tool displays the part components extent dimensions, also called bounding box dimensions. Glovius picks up the accurate dimensions even if the component is designed at an inclination to the default planes. Analyze tool calculates the volume of the component along with the billet volume. This aids in the calculation of the billet wastage in case the component is manufactured by milling etc. Analyze tool gives you the mass of the component. In case the original file doesn’t have material properties assigned, you can edit the density values to calculate the mass of the component.

Section Tool
Section tool helps you see the internals of the component. Using the various options in Section tool, you can identify the internal geometry features. Apart from taking sections along standard planes, you can use the reference planes in the component or create custom planes for sectioning along a specific plane.

Measure Tool
Measure tool is our most used and versatile tool. Using the Measure tool, you can check the feature definitions – the length of an edge, the diameter of a hole, the width of a rib, and more. Glovius assists users in measurements by highlighting the suitable geometric entities (points, edges, planes) to enable users to measure faster. We also have specific measure tools called Tape Measure and Area measure – the tape measure can be used to calculate the total length of a complex edge or spline or the length of a complex curve. The Area measure tool is used to calculate the area of planar and non-planar surfaces. Read more about all the capabilities of measure tool here.

3D Compare Tool
The design of a part evolves through various iterations during the design to manufacturing process. Compare tool helps you to identify the changes to the features of the component. Input the two versions of files to Glovius and visual the changes (and their similarities) in 3D. Glovius identifies the changes to geometry like change in the fillet radius or addition/removal of a stiffener rib. You can export a PDF report of this result and share it with your team and suppliers.

Thickness Analysis Tool
The thickness analysis tool analyzes the material distribution in the part design and displays the results visually. Using this tool, you can check the values of all the dimensions in the component alongwith the thick and thin regions. Identifying the thick and thin regions helps you in optimizing the part design. Thin regions may fail during usage and thick regions increase material costs. Read more about this tool here.

Projected Area Tool
Projected area is an indispensable tool to calculate the area at a particular plane. If the part is being cast, use this tool to calculate the casting pressure. The applications of this tool are varied. For example, you can use the area value from this tool to calculate the drag coeffients of the part if it is intended to be used in a fluid environment.

Draft Analysis Tool
Draft analysis is an indispensable tool if your component is manufactured via Casting or Injection molding. Using this tool, you can calculate the drafts made by all surfaces of the components with respect to a reference plane. The results are displayed in 3D with colorized surfaces to categorize and identify the surfaces based on the draft angle values.

Thickness Analysis of Parts

The ability to determine the material distribution and the corresponding thickness or thinness of a casting part is crucial for its design and manufacturing. Non optimal values of the part leads to issues in its performance during use. Thin wall sections may be structurally weak causing the component to fail while over compensated thick portions lead to an increase in the weight of the component and hence the subsequent cost to manufacture.

In Glovius you can quickly identify the material distribution using the Thickness Analysis tool. The tool calculates the thickness using the Ray method or the Sphere method. You can choose either method from the Glovius Settings Dialog. Each of the method is suitable for a specific use case.

  • Ray method is typically suitable for finding thin wall sections and helps detect edges
  • Sphere method is useful for identifying thick sections that may warp or deform during casting process

    View CATIA Parts and Assemblies with Glovius

    Many of our users are in Automotive and Aerospace industries and use CATIA as the CAD software of choice.

    Glovius helps you view your CATIA V5 files without the need of a CATIA license. Glovius supports 3D Geometry, PMI information and Captures data stored in CATIA parts (CATPart) and assembly (CATProduct) files.

    You can also use Glovius 2D Viewer to open and view Catia Drawing (CATDrawing) files.

If your CATIA file is Cast or Injection molded, use the Draft Analysis tool to check the angle each of the surfaces make towards a default plane.
    3. Export CATIA file to other formats viz. 3D PDF, STL, Powerpoint documents and 3D HTML pages. Glovius can also generate 3D reports containing all the information needed for collaboration.
